What Are Trapped Emotions? The Emotion Code Explained Simply

Have you ever noticed how the body remembers what the mind tries to forget?

A memory may fade, a situation may pass, but the body often holds the emotional imprint — in the heart, in the breath, in the jaw, in the gut, in the nervous system. Sometimes you can even feel it: a heaviness, a tightness, a familiar emotional pattern that returns again and again, even when you understand it logically.

This is where The Emotion Code® can be deeply supportive.

It’s a gentle method used to help release emotional energy that has become “trapped” in the body — not through reliving the past, but through simple awareness, intention and biofeedback (muscle testing) that allows the body to let go naturally.

And it’s not just for humans.
Animals also store stress and emotions — often even more sensitively than we do.

Let’s explore how this works, why it matters, and how emotional release can help the body, brain and nervous system return to balance.

What Do We Mean by “Trapped Emotions”?

When we feel something intensely — grief, fear, shock, shame, heartbreak, overwhelm — and we don’t have the space, support or safety to process it at the time, the emotional charge doesn’t simply disappear.

The nervous system does what it’s designed to do:
it protects us.

It may push the feeling down — into the tissues, the muscles, the diaphragm, the jaw, or the chest — to help us keep functioning. This is a survival mechanism, not a mistake.

Over time, however, these stored patterns may show up as:

  • Feeling emotionally reactive over small things
  • Tension that never fully relaxes
  • Difficulty trusting, opening or feeling safe
  • Fatigue, shutdown or emotional numbness
  • Recurring anxiety, irritability or heaviness
  • Behaviours that don’t match who we truly are

For animals, trapped emotional energy may appear as:

  • Nervousness or reactivity
  • Change in behaviour after a move, separation or new environment
  • Fear of touch, grooming or certain situations
  • Excessive clinginess or withdrawal
  • Sudden changes in mood or appetite

It’s the same nervous system principle — just expressed differently.

These patterns are not “who we are.”
They are protective adaptations.
Once we no longer need them, they can be released.

How the Emotion Code® Works — Simply Explained

The Emotion Code® uses muscle testing to gently access the subconscious — the part of the mind that stores emotional memory, behavioural patterns and the body’s protective responses.

Through this we can identify:

  • Which emotion is being held
  • When it became stored
  • Whether it originated from a specific experience, environment or inherited pattern
  • Where it is being held in the body

There is no reliving of trauma and no need to “tell the whole story.”
We simply acknowledge the pattern and release the emotional charge, usually through the governing meridian or through intention-based energetic clearing.

Clients often describe the release as:

  • A deep breath they didn’t realise they were holding
  • A softening inside the chest, throat or diaphragm
  • A feeling of lightness or emotional clarity
  • A sense of “coming back into the body”
  • Or simply… relief

The release is subtle, natural and often immediate.

Why This Works Gently — Not Forcing, Not Digging

The nervous system does not let go through force.
It lets go when:

  • It feels safe
  • It feels seen
  • It is no longer in defense mode

This is why The Emotion Code® pairs beautifully with:

  • Breathwork
  • Vagus nerve support
  • Cranial and diaphragm release
  • Mind-body therapy
  • Kinesiology
  • Somatic awareness

When the body is regulated, emotions can move freely.

The goal is not to “fix” you.
The goal is to help your body remember what ease feels like.

What About Animals?

Animals feel deeply — often more purely than humans.

They absorb our stress, our moods, our tone, our presence.
They are highly sensitive to environment, change and emotional atmosphere.

Because they cannot explain what they feel, they often express emotional tension through behaviour.

The Emotion Code® works beautifully for:

  • Dogs with separation stress or reactivity
  • Horses with handling or training anxiety
  • Cats who withdraw or act unsettled after changes
  • Animals who have been rehomed, rescued or adopted
  • Older animals experiencing grief or confusion

Sessions for animals are often done using surrogate muscle testing — meaning the practitioner tests on themselves while focusing on the animal.

This is gentle, safe, and non-invasive.
No handling is required unless the animal seeks contact.

What People Commonly Notice After Emotional Release

After one or several sessions, clients often share that they feel:

  • Calmer and clearer in their thinking
  • More grounded in the body
  • Less emotionally reactive
  • More able to express themselves without effort
  • More connected to others
  • More at home within themselves

Animals often show:

  • Softer body language
  • Less tension in posture and movement
  • More willingness to interact
  • Improved sleep and rest
  • Greater emotional ease

None of this is forced.
The body simply reorganises itself when emotional weight is gone.

A Gentle Way Back to Yourself

Trapped emotion does not mean something is wrong with you.

It means your body protected you — beautifully, intelligently — at a time when you needed protection.

And now, it may be ready to let go.

If you’d like to explore this approach — for yourself or for an animal you care deeply about — you are welcome to reach out or book a session.

Option A — Warm & Clear

The Emotion Code® is a gentle, non-invasive way to release emotional patterns stored in the body or nervous system — without reliving the past.
This approach supports both humans and animals, helping the body soften, breathe and return to emotional ease.

Option B — Soothing & Relational

Sometimes the mind lets go, but the body still remembers.
The Emotion Code® helps release stored emotional tension so you can feel lighter, clearer and more at home within yourself — or help your animal companion do the same.

Option C — Slightly More Clinical

The Emotion Code® is a biofeedback-based method for identifying and releasing trapped emotional energy.
This can support emotional balance, nervous system regulation and behavioural ease — in both humans and animals.

What Are Trapped Emotions? The Emotion Code® Explained Simply

Most of us have had the experience of feeling upset long after a situation has passed.
Maybe your chest tightens when you remember a conversation, or your stomach knots when you think of a certain person or place.

These sensations are not “in your head.”
They are emotional patterns stored in the body.

The Emotion Code® is a gentle method of identifying and releasing these stored emotional patterns, so the body and nervous system can settle, soften and feel safe again. It can be used with adults, children — and even animals — because it works with the body’s natural communication system, rather than talk-based processing.

What Are Trapped Emotions?

Throughout life, we experience many emotions: joy, grief, frustration, excitement, fear, love, disappointment.
Most of the time, emotions move — they rise, peak and resolve naturally.

However, when an experience is overwhelming, unexpected, repetitive or unsupported, the body may not fully process the emotional response.
Instead, the emotion can remain “active” in the nervous system.

This is what we call a trapped emotion:

  • The memory may fade
  • But the emotional charge remains
  • Showing up in the body as tension, pain, sensitivity or reactivity

For example:

Experience Possible Trapped Emotion How it may show in the body
Criticism or rejection Shame Chest tightness, collapsing posture
Loss or separation Grief Heaviness in the heart, fatigue
Uncertainty or stress Fear Jaw tension, shallow breath
Feeling unsupported Anxiety or insecurity Heel/foot pain, stomach knots

This is not psychological theory alone — it aligns with nervous system science.
The body protects what it perceives as unfinished.
Trapped emotions are simply the body trying to keep you safe.

How the Emotion Code® Works

The Emotion Code® uses muscle testing to communicate with the subconscious — the part of the mind that stores emotional and physiological patterns.

The practitioner gently tests the body’s response to identify:

  1. Which emotion is stored
  2. Where it is being held in the body
  3. When it may have been formed
  4. Whether it is ready to be released

Once identified, we use light touch or intention along the governing meridian (the main energy channel of the body) to signal to the nervous system that it can let go.

There is:

  • No reliving of painful memories
  • No emotional “pushing”
  • No force
  • No reopening of trauma

The body releases only what it is ready to release.

Why the Body Holds On

The body stores emotional patterns when:

  • The experience was too big to process at the time
  • There wasn’t enough safety or support to express the emotion
  • The nervous system was already overwhelmed
  • The emotional response felt forbidden, dangerous or too much
  • The person needed to “stay strong” or continue functioning

In these moments, your body did exactly what it needed to protect you.
Releasing trapped emotions is not about digging into the past — it’s about letting the body know the danger has passed.

What Clients Often Notice After Release

Shifts are usually gentle and natural:

  • Easier breathing
  • Less tension in the jaw, chest or abdomen
  • A sense of lightness or relief
  • Feeling more present, grounded and connected
  • More emotional clarity
  • Calmness without effort

Sometimes changes are very subtle.
Sometimes they feel surprisingly profound.

Either way — the body moves at the pace that is safe.

What About the Heart-Wall?

During times of emotional overwhelm, the body may create a Heart-Wall — a protective “barrier” of trapped emotions around the heart.
This can help us get through difficult moments — but in the long term, it may affect:

  • Emotional openness
  • Intimacy
  • Self-expression
  • Feeling connected to others
  • Creativity and joy

Releasing Heart-Wall layers is gentle and steady.
It often brings people back to a clearer sense of self — softer, more open, more authentically present.

Why This Also Helps Children and Animals

Children and animals cannot always express what they feel — but they show emotional patterns through their body and behaviour:

  • Sleep changes
  • Clinginess or withdrawal
  • Restlessness or shutdown
  • Behavioral outbursts
  • Tension patterns

Because the Emotion Code® works through muscle testing and intention, it does not require talking.
For online or animal sessions, we use surrogate testing (your body, my body, or a dedicated surrogate) with consent.

The process is still gentle, precise and respectful.

Session Format

Emotion Code® sessions are shorter — usually 20–30 minutes — because the nervous system needs time to integrate between releases.

Some people feel shifts after one session.
Others may benefit from a series of 3–10 sessions, depending on what the body is ready to release.

We always follow the body — never push it.

A Gentle Path Home

Trapped emotions are not signs of weakness, failure or something wrong with you.
They are evidence of how deeply the body protects you.

When the body feels safe enough to release these patterns, space opens:

  • for softness
  • for presence
  • for deeper connection
  • for a lighter emotional experience of life

This work is quiet, patient and compassionate.

If you feel drawn to explore this, you are welcome to reach out or book a session.

Sometimes emotions don’t simply “pass.”
They can settle into the body — showing up as tension, heaviness, irritability, feeling stuck, or behaving in ways that don’t feel like us.

And this isn’t only true for people.
Animals also absorb stress and emotional energy from experiences, environments and the humans they bond with.

The Emotion Code® is a gentle, non-invasive method that helps release these stored emotional patterns from the nervous system. Using muscle testing, intention and energetic support, we can help the body (or animal) let go of what it no longer needs — without re-living the past or forcing emotion to surface.

When emotional weight is released, the body feels lighter, clearer and more at ease — often with noticeable shifts in mood, sleep, behavior and overall wellbeing.
