Stress is a natural part of life, and our nervous system is designed to help us respond to it. The fight-or-flight response is the body’s built-in survival system — it increases heart rate, sharpens focus, releases adrenaline and prepares us to act. However, when the nervous system stays stuck in this state for too long, stress stops being helpful and begins to affect our physical, mental and emotional health.
What is the Fight-or-Flight Response?
The fight-or-flight response is controlled by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. It is designed to be temporary — once the threat passes, the parasympathetic system (rest and digest) should take over and bring the body back to balance.
But in modern life, the “threat” is often not physical danger — it’s emotional stress, trauma, overthinking, work pressure, poor sleep, chronic pain or even scrolling the news. The body can’t tell the difference, so it reacts as if it’s still in danger.
What Happens When We Stay in Fight-or-Flight?
When the stress response stays active for too long, the body begins to adapt to it as a “new normal”. This can lead to:
- Constant tension in the muscles (jaw clenching, neck/shoulder tightness, back pain or foot tension like plantar fasciitis)
- Shallow breathing or tight diaphragm
- Racing thoughts, anxiety, irritability or emotional numbness
- Fatigue or “tired but wired” feeling
- Poor digestion, bloating, reflux or constipation
- Hormonal imbalances or sleep disturbances
- Increased inflammation and slower recovery from injury
Why the Body Gets Stuck
The nervous system gets stuck in fight-or-flight when it no longer feels safe to relax. This may happen due to trauma, ongoing stress, unprocessed emotions, chronic pain, diaphragm tension, poor posture or overactive primitive reflexes. The diaphragm tightens, breathing becomes shallow and the vagus nerve (responsible for calming the body) becomes less active.
